COMSTOCK PARK – Great Lake’s leadoff hitter Leonal Valera fouled off the game’s first pitch from West Michigan’s Kiedro Monteroi Tuesday at LMCU Ballpark.
A split second later, the Whitecaps pounded the evening air with a series of fireworks in celebration of West Michigan’s first home game in 622 days.
Unfortunately for baseball-starved Whitecaps fans, there really wasn’t much to cheer about until the game’s final pitches. The Loons blew out the Whitecaps 9-1, holding West Michigan to two hits and a run that was scored in the bottom of the ninth.
Matt Manning bit by the long ball in Mud Hens’ loss

Indianapolis Indians 4, Toledo Mud Hens 3 (box)
Matt Manning was a little homer prone and Indianapolis stayed in the game as a result, and ultimately pulled it out late. The Tigers top pitching prospect gave up solo shots on grooved fastballs to both Travis Swaggerty and Will Craig in the first inning. He struck out the other three hitters he faced in the frame. From there, Manning started to get the feel for his curveball and he racked up 11 straight outs until Andrew Susac ambushed a first pitch fastball for the third solo home run allowed by Manning on the day. He struck out seven, didn’t walk a hitter, and the three hits he gave up all left the park.
Rey Rivera? I Just Assumed He Was Gone. By TheQuestionToEveryone sAnswer on May 9, 2021, 12:24pm EDT 6
I saw Rey Rivera s name on a West Michigan boxscore. I couldn t remember an instant where his name was mentioned during the long 2020 non-year and the 2021 Spring Training. I just assumed he had matriculated out of the system. Instead, he is a man among boys in West Michigan. And also picking up where he left off as he is batting .143
Rivera is returning to the place where he enjoyed his best season, hitting .237 with 9 jacks in only 115 games in 2018.
I m diving back into the rosters to make sure we still don t have Steven Moya.
TinCaps fall to West Michigan, 6-3, in Espinoza s return
DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette
The TinCaps dropped their first game of the season, falling to West Michigan 6-3 at Parkview Field after the Whitecaps pushed across five runs in the seventh inning, helped along by a badly blown call. TinCaps right-hander Anderson Espinoza pitched for the first time since 2016.
How it Happened
The teams entered the seventh locked in a 1-1 pitcher s duel, but that ended during a wild inning that took nearly 58 minutes to play. In the top half of the inning, Sam Keating became the first Fort Wayne pitcher this season to really let the game get away from him. A double, catcher s interference and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out and that s when the proceedings got weird.
TinCaps beat West Michigan, 4-2, improve to 2-0
DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette
Luis Almanzar ripped a two-run single to center in the sixth and the TinCaps pitching dominated for a second straight night as Fort Wayne won 4-2 in the second of a six-game series against West Michigan.
How it Happened
After a three-run homer from Justin Lopez and a Kelvin Melean three-run triple in Tuesday s opener, Fort Wayne 0 for its first 6 with runners in scoring position tonight, preventing the hosts from taking advantage of some early opportunities. Twice in the first five innings the TinCaps put the first two runners on base, but they were only able to get one run combined out of those opportunities and that came when Melean grounded into a double play in the third. In the fifth, Jawuan Harris struck out with runners on second and third and one out and Melean grounded sharply back to the pitcher to end the threat.
