i sat down with her to find out how she got through the darkest moment of her life. what did that church mean to your mother? that church meant everything to her. my mom joined that church in 1974 when i was a sophomore in high school. we call it mama got jesus. after mama got jesus, we all started to attend emmanuel. reverend sharon was a trauma chaplain working in hospitals in dallas. her mother, ethyl lance was the sexton at emmanuel a.m.e. church in charleston. she was the one that opened the church in the morning and kept that church lean. she would be the one that locked up at night. that was her pride and joy. she was part of the fabric of that church? she was i do believe. yeah. breaking overnight, church massacre. then my niece called and she said, sharon, the chaplain wants
myself. i couldn t tell myself, okay, this has happened, you re going to get through this. you know, what they say, you know, a doctor can t cure themselves. well, a chaplain, you need somebody else to minister to you because you can t minister to yourself. she joins me live now. her new book is called for such a time as this. hope and forgiveness after the charleston massacre. it hits bookshelves today. thank you for having me. no, no. so let s pick up where we left off there. you said you can t minister to yourself. how did you do through it? i got through it through a lot of prayer. a lot of yelling and screaming at god. a lot of support from other clergy members that were really good friends and my children, especially my children, brandon and asia. they were there to kind of push
congregations know that if we go by the love that god has mandated us and to love our neighbors as ourselves, then all of these things about guns and violence and domestic violence, all of these things, i believe, would be different. if we be the group of people who we claim to be. on that and on guns, sharon, we have now also heard from this oregon gunman s father who this gunman had 13, 14 guns that he had gotten legally over the course of a couple years. his father said the guns are the killers. do you agree with him? well, we know that a gun cannot possibly fire itself unless it misfires or something. but you know what i mean. guns are the problem.
