Christians left âin deep crisisâ by closure of churches in lockdown By James Mulholland STOPPING public religious worship during the pandemic has placed Christians in Scotland into a “deep crisis” and the Government is responsible of a “failure of candour” about why it closed churches, a court has heard. Advocate Janys Scott QC told judge Lord Braid that the pandemic has highlighted a “irreconcilable conflict” which believers have between obeying the State and God. Lord Braid heard that this tension has caused 27 church ministers to instruct Ms Scott to raise a judicial review at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

A group of church leaders has launched legal action over the closure of places of worship in Scotland under recent Covid-19 measures.
Backed by the Christian Legal Centre, they are seeking a judicial review after Scottish Government ministers refused their request for church buildings to be allowed to reopen.
A court decision on whether to allow the legal action to proceed is expected in the coming weeks.
Worship criminalised
The 27 church leaders and pastors involved come from a range of Christian denominations and include the Reverend Dr William Philip, who is minister of The Tron Church in Glasgow and a Trustee of The Christian Institute.
