President Lazarus Chakwera warned that government will move to recover all the stolen public funds, interdict all public officers implicated in the thcontroversial K6.2 billion Covid-19 fund, whose audit has shown gross abuse, discipline them and then ban any business impilicated from any future government contracts.
Chakwera: I am taking action
Chakwera issued the sterrn warning during a televised national address from Mtunthama state residence in Lilongwe.
“I have decided to use independent and investigative audits to ensure that our pursuit of thieves is backed by evidence that will stand up in court. And now that the evidence related to the K6.2 billion is before us, I am taking action,” he said.
Former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to create an enabling environment that prioritizes women initiatives to grow in wealth, power and authority to ensure enjoyment of equal opportunities.

She was speaking virtually on Wednesday in Lilongwe during the launch of the gender responsive procurement financial inclusion initiative and a K10 billion women’s fund that will be followed by a business women summit.
Sirleaf noted that Covid-19 which has disrupted economies has compounded gender inequalities as it has pushed more women into poverty through the loss of jobs and business opportunities.

Former president Peter Mutharika has come out of his cacoon to accuse his successor President Lazarus Chakwera of persecuting him.
Mutharika faulted Chakwera’s administration of leading a political and economic persecution against DPP officials and himself.
President Chakwera when he visited his predecessor Peter Mutharika in Mangochi.
At a news conference on Saturday at his retirement home in Mangochi, Mutharika said there’s need to end a culture of prosecuting former presidents.
Mutharika, ousted from power through last year’s fresh presidential election, said for instance, he did not prosecute Joyce Banda when he was voted into power because he wanted the belief of attacks previous leaders to end.
The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has warned that taxpayers risk paying a huge price for the mistakes the Tonse Alliance led government has allegedly made by firing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-sponsored Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioners, Jean Mathanga and Linda Kunje.
Namiwa: President Chakwera should tread carefully
On Tuesday this week, through the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), announced the rescission of the appointment of Mathanga and Kunje, citing the judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal, which found them incompetent in the historical Presidential Elections Case.
The dismissal came at the back of a court case, which the two Commissioners initiated to challenge President Lazarus Chakwera’s decision to withhold their letters of appointment.

The Older Persons Protocol aims to strengthen regional protection for the rights of older persons, providing an opportune moment for older persons to enjoy their full rights and freedoms on an equal basis with other population groups.
The ratification of the Older Persons Protocol is needed to strengthen legal protection for the rights of older persons and empower them to champion their own rights, complementing other national strategies by the government and providing redress for the violation of the rights of older persons at national and regional level.
