Eight kilometres of new electricity networks will boost clean air

More than eight kilometres of electricity networks have been put in place as part of the first phase of the Grand Harbour Clean Air project. Addressing a news conference, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg and European Funds parliamentary secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said the underground electricity cables will distribute electricity from Enemalta’s primary substation to the docks of Grand Harbour, Marsa and Senglea.   Borg said the €50 million investment will be improving air quality for 17,000 families living in the Grand Harbour area by reducing more than 90% of the air pollution caused by ships.  Video: Infrastructure Malta Studies conducted indicate that through this investment, Malta will save up to €375 million in costs related to the consequences that may arise from air pollution within 20 years.

Hypogeum skulls on display at the National Museum of Archaeology

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum skulls, which have captured popular imagination since they were unearthed at the beginning of the past century, are on display at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. The display, called RELATED STORIES The skulls have long generated debate and interest due to the fact that Sir Temi Zammit described them as being “of the long-headed type” during excavations in the first decade of the 20th century. On Monday the National Heritage Ministry said that people often ask to see the “elongated skulls” and several film crews have included them into narratives that feature extra-terrestrial creatures. 

Mario Grech, Charmaine Gauci among Republic Day honours recipients

Cardinal Mario Grech and Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci were among those awarded Republic Day honours by President George Vella on Sunday in a specially organised ceremony respecting social distancing guidelines. The ceremony took place at the President s Palace in Valletta. Eleven members were awarded The National Order of Merit, and seven others the Midalja ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika. Because of the pandemic, the President did not place the medal on the individuals but those awarded placed it on themselves once this was handed to them.
