Traders displeased by extension of COVID-19 curbs; urge Maharashtra govt to take sympathetic look at their hardships

Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) has expressed serious displeasure over the Maharashtra Governmentâs decision to extend the lockdown up to 7 am on June 1. The Federation has estimated that total business loss incurred by retail business by small and medium-size retail traders at Rs 69,500 crore for the period April 4 till May 31.
The Association President Viren Shah said there is no relief to shopkeepers terming the government decision on lockdown extension ââunfortunate.ââ ââ The state government has not even mentioned cities like Mumbai where cases are dropping and manageable and unlocking the city in a gradual manner. Itâs high time that Maharashtra Government will have to seriously think of tradersâ issues and concerns.ââ

As the COVID-19 cases in the financial capital are declining day by day, Mumbai shop owners have urged CM Udhav Thackeray to allow all non-essential shops to remain open from 10 am to 8 pm on all days to revive the economy back on track.
In a letter addressed to Thackeray, the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association president Viren Shah wrote, We are sure you will take prompt decision to ensure that shopkeepers with proper precaution can resume their operation in a systematic manner.
Meanwhile, Mumbai on Monday (May 10) recorded 1794 new Covid-19 cases while 3580 patients were discharged. The city has witnessed the lowest single-day spike in the cases since March 30. Last, on March 15, the city had reported 1,712 cases, after that the city reported the lowest number of cases today after seeing a massive spike. Maharashtra government’s decision of implementing
lockdown in the state has significantly impacted the shopkeepers, mall owners, and restauranteurs. According to the
Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (
FRTWA), the shopkeepers are losing Rs 1,300 crore a day. There are 13 lakh shops in the state out of which around four lakh shops are in the city itself.
“We have till now incurred losses to the tune of Rs 24,000 crore due to initial partial lockdown and later the complete lockdown since April 5,” said
