Covid’s devastating impact on night life, music

Bar owners are among the most affected people by the Covid-19 pandemic. And their pain has been made worse by the curfews put in place to curb the spread of the virus.
The first curfew was set at 7pm, this changed to 9pm, to 10pm to 11pm and back to 10pm. This has totally changed nightlife as bars are required to close an hour before the 10pm curfew time. And social distancing has sounded the death knell for live entertainment events.
For the last one year, artistes and deejays have been denied a source of income. Also affected are stand-up comedians, emcees and other performers. Musicians have had to host fans to virtual shows, most of which don’t pay at all.

Dutch bar owners, sex workers protest against virus lockdown
By PETER DEJONG and MIKE CORDERMarch 2, 2021 GMT
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) In a scene reminiscent of carefree cafe life before coronavirus lockdown, Peter Bender reached across one of the outdoor tables at De Ooievaar bar and placed a cup of coffee and slice of apple pie in front of one of his guests.
But the coffee went cold and the pie remained uneaten at the bar in Rotterdam’s historic Delfshaven neighborhood.
With tough coronavirus measures shutting Dutch cafes and restaurants since mid-October, Bender’s guests Tuesday were all white inflatable dummies dressed in T-shirts, wigs and large red noses. They were part of a protest that saw an unknown number of cafes across the country symbolically open their terraces amid growing opposition to the lockdown from hard-hit businesses.
“Unfortunately, several bars and restaurants have had to shut down because of the pandemic. The first wave of closures happened when all bars, restaurants and nightclubs were ordered shut at the beginning of the pandemic in Kenya,” said PERAK director Mike Muthami.
“While there was some relief for the sector when the Government allowed partial reopening, things have not improved well enough for the sector to fully recover,” Muthami added.
According to the association, since the onset of Covid-19 in the country, more than 30 percent of the bars and restaurants that were in operation before the pandemic have shut down completely.
