existence. so i do believe we should be working on that. i don t like the idea of just randomly mailing checks to everyone. i don t think it s as effective as some of the types of programs that i m talking about can be, but clearly, we learned a lot in this recession which is people don t have to be tortured every time the economy turns down. we have a lot of wherewithal to help the people who need it. the economy is coming back, dan, every day we hear from small businesses who say they can t find workers. we keep hearing it every time you go out to eat, a restaurant worker says i can t get anyone. why can t restaurants get the money? they got two rounds and they got $28 billion from the government in the american rescue plan. why can t restaurants use that money to pay workers more? you worry that people are getting paid so much money at home? offer them more money to make
people. hire fewer people, hire lower prices, or they simply cut pay. so wages bounce along, along the bottom. and then you have this phenomenon of a lot of job openings, and not so many people looking for the jobs. and so it s forced businesses to raise their wages. and now you re in a situation, where for a hotel worker, for a bar worker, a restaurant worker, not all of them, obviously, but on average, they re receiving ages of $16 an hour, just is under $16 an hour. which is above where we would have been in all likelihood, had the economy just been on present course and speed. and the big question is, will business try to pass these costs along? this is great for workers. let s not kid ourselves. this is what we want to see happen for workers. but it will add to costs for business. and will businesses add these costs alone or will they absorb them? one other interesting phenomenon i want to show you on the politics of all of this, it s pretty amazing. this map shows every state bas

This Cinco de Mayo, branding around happy hours and celebrations come with a side of purpose. The restaurant industry has been one of those hardest hit during the pandemic, and brands are taking the opportunity to help by enticing people to order from restaurants and to tip their servers and delivery drivers.
Cinco de Mayo coincides with dining restrictions being lifted in cities across the country. But restaurant reopenings come after a loss of 8 million jobs and $280 billion in sales in the industry in 2020, according to the National Restaurant Association.
As such, Cinco de Mayo the commemoration of a victory by the Mexican army over French troops in 1862 and usually a laid-back holiday has become a way for brands, and especially alcohol brands, to support the struggling restaurant industry, one they also depend on for business.
