Visitors reduce by over 70% due to COVID-19 fears Tourism to the Nilgiris has reduced by almost 70% since January this year, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases across the country.
According to data available on visitors to the popular tourist locations in the district, such as the Horticulture farm in Kallar, the Kattery Park, Doddabetta Tea Park, Government Botanical Garden, the Rose Garden, Sims Park and the Arboretum, the average number of visitors during the weekends has dropped to just a little over 2,000 visitors. It stood at around 15,000 prior to the surge in cases.

ALCOHOL drinkers and smokers will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets after Finance Minister Thabo Sophonea proposed to finally implement the sin tax which will see alcohol and tobacco levies increased by 15 and 30 percent respectively.
Presenting his budget speech in parliament yesterday, Mr Sophonea said “during 2021/22 fiscal year, the government intends to introduce…an alcohol and tobacco levy at 15 and 30 percent, respectively”.
He said the government hoped to realise an additional M286, 6 million in revenue annually from the levies.
The levies have been on the cards since 2019 when former Finance Minister and current Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro announced that the government intended to increase the levies during the 2019/2020 financial year.

‘Price of chicken goes up without any relation to supply levels’ Hotel and restaurant owners in Kochi have called for a permanent system to monitor the price of meat, especially chicken, in the wake of what they called were “big swings” in price levels that did not actually reflect the market situation.
“The price of chicken goes up without any relation to supply levels or rise in cost of production,” said Azeez Moosa, president of the Ernakulam district unit of Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association.
