Restaurants won t be allowed to serve sit-down meals for at least the next two weeks, as South Africa moves to level 4 of the national lockdown.
Banks, landlords and suppliers must support restaurant owners during this time, industry representatives have asked.
Deliveries won t keep restaurants afloat, given the large percentage of commission charged by delivery platforms.
Restaurants and other eateries will only be permitted to sell food for takeaway or delivery until 11 July, announced President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday evening, as he announced that South Africa will move to more stringent level 4 lockdown regulations.

Celebrity chef Brian Turner leads the collective
The new not-for-profit small business community is spearheaded by TV chef Brian Turner and has a mission to save the UK’s independent restaurants.
The sector has been one of the very hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Industry data shows that there are around 3,000 fewer restaurants in Britain than there were in March last year – which is the equivalent of eight closures every day. Since the start of this year, the trend has accelerated with the independent market suffering 2,000 closures in January and February alone.

The hospitality sector has been granted an urgent interdict to halt the implementation of new labour rules amid an ongoing collective agreement fight.

Restaurants owners and food outlets were shocked last month when the Labour Department unilaterally extended the bargaining councilâs collective agreement to include employers who were not previously part of the council.
