Description of the disaster
Typhoon Goni which is locally known as Rolly, made landfall on 1 November 2020 as a super typhoon (Category 5) over Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 225 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 280 kilometers per hour. It’s the Philippines’ nineteenth named storm for the year 2020.
At its peak strength on landfall on Catanduanes and Albay, Super Typhoon Goni caused widespread damage to high-risk structures and almost total damage to structures made of light materials in the highly exposed coastal areas. Many roof failures were observed in houses and industrial buildings. Electrical power distribution and communication services were severely disrupted. Water systems were severely damaged. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has reported that more than 5,800 families affected by the onslaught of Typhoon “Ulysses” in November last year remain in evacuation centers.
Based on the DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC), as of 6 p.m., January 6, around 5, 808 families or 22, 645 individuals continue to stay in 161 evacuation centers.
Meanwhile, it reported that a total of 34 families or 103 persons opted to stay with their relatives and/or friends.
The DSWD said the number of families affected by Ulysses had reached 1,266,426 or 5,201,024 persons in 7,311 barangays from the eight most-affected regions.
