Cannon salute marks Coast Guard s Changing of Command ceremony at Fort Wadsworth © Provided by WCBS Radio New York Fort Wadsworth NEW YORK (WCBS 880) Don t be alarmed if you hear cannon fire near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Friday morning. The U.S. Coast Guard is holding a Changing of Command ceremony at Staten Island s Fort Wadsworth, which sits at the foot of the bridge, that will include a cannon salute. Traffic on the span will not be impacted, the NYPD said. The event is being held between 10:05 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. During the ceremony, Capt. Zeita Merchant, who has served as deputy commander since May 2020, will relieve Capt. Jason Tama as commander of the Coast Guard s New York sector.
