New signage for The Closet (PHOTO: Jamie Crage) DORSET Council has granted proposals for a Weymouth bar and adjoining nightclub to operate under one licence, despite previous objections. The Closet Bar and Nightclub and adjoining Somewhere Else Bar, on the corner of Maiden Street and St Edmund Street, has been given permission to be transformed into one larger venue and will now operate under one licence. The Closet has now taken out the partition walls to make a double walkway through the building connecting the two internally - with a bar on one side and a nightclub on the other. The new licence also enables the business to operate with one entrance and exit instead of two, giving door staff more control of people entering and leaving the premises.
Carribean restaurant Tropical Turtle in Weymouth had its alcohol licence turned down Pictures: Tropical Turtle A NEW premises licence for the Tropical Turtle in Maiden Street, Weymouth has been approved – despite concerns about late night disturbance from some neighbours. A licensing meeting hearing last week was told that the new business was nothing like a previous bar and club on the site, which had been closed down, and was designed to be family-friendly offering Caribbean food with only a small bar area. Licence holder Kristian Barker said he had already done his best to tackle any issues which residents feared and promised to tackle any problems, personally.
Those behind the venture say it will greatly improve conditions for residents and those visiting the town. Applicant Mr Kristian Barker told an online licensing panel that the business will be primarily a family restaurant serving Caribbean food with a small bar – with last orders by 11pm and no off sales. The estimated capacity of the building has been put at around 50, including around 15 in the bar area - a quarter of what it was. His agent, Tim Munro, stressed that the use of the building would be nothing like a previous bar on the site which had been closed by police and licensing officers.
