Event description
In our 50th anniversary year, Burgmann College Residential Fellow Professor Asmi Wood will present the Annual Reconciliation Lecture. About this event
By Professor Asmi Wood PhD LLB (Hons) ANU
To date, there has not yet been a full or formal recognition of how Australia was ‘acquired’ by the British. Thus, there are significant legal, political and social consequences that flow from this absence of any form of agreement between the various peoples who now share this continent. This talk will explore how such agreements can be formulated in retrospect. This belated form of mutual recognition can be given legal effect but needs a safe legal and political framework that works for all parties. Such agreements, if done correctly, can provide a better path forward and hopefully provide a much less bumpy ride into the future than has been the case from the time of the first arrival of the British to the present day.
