Cases of Mucormycosis, a fungal infection, affecting some COVID-19 survivors are on the rise in Gujarat which has left many patients blind, doctors and officials claimed on Saturday.
Mathur Savani, chairman of Surat-based Kiran Super multi-speciality hospital, said mucormycosis was detected in a patient who had recovered from COVID-19 disease around three weeks back. This number has gone up to around 50 now while 60 more such patients are awaiting treatment, Savani told PTI.
The hospital, which is managed by a trust, has been receiving several patients diagnosed with Mucormycosis who are being referred from various areas in Surat and other parts of Gujarat, he said.

The first of the four oxygen generator plants allotted to the State by the Union government has begun functioning at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kalamassery.
The plant, which operates on PSA (pressure swing absorption) technology, will run round-the-clock and can generate 600 litres of oxygen per minute. Of the four plants that are being set up in the State, this one, set up at a cost of around ₹1.5 crore, is the smallest. The new plant will supply oxygen to 250 beds in eight wards where COVID-19 patients are under treatment. The plant draws air, compresses it, and provides oxygen of 95% concentration via pipelines.

The management of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) has decided to administer COVID-19 vaccine to all its employees in a month’s time, besides scaling up tests and stepping up medical facilities.
Special isolation wards would be set up across the mining areas with the provision of at least 1,200 beds in quarantine centres. Instruction have been issued to procure necessary medicines including injections, as also oxygen. Appointment of necessary doctors and other support staff on contract basis has also been approved.
Chairman and Managing Director of the company N. Sridhar held a video conference with the Directors, Chief Medical Officer and other officials concerned on Thursday. He instructed the officials scale up Covid tests across the mining areas and vaccinate at least 2,000 employees every day so that the vaccination drive was completed in about a month’s time. Mysore/Mysuru: Amid a rising COVID curve, fear of oxygen shortage looms large over private and government hospitals in city. They are facing scarcity of medical oxygen since the last one week.
The situation is likely to become grim in the coming days in case there is an exponential increase in
COVID-19 cases especially if the number of patients who require oxygenated beds. All big hospitals including private and Government have reserved certain beds for patients whose oxygen saturation level is low. Continuous supply of oxygen up to 10 litres a minute is supplied through pipes in a pressure-controlled environment.
