Doctors sometimes take bank loans to fund qualifying examinations —Consultant

Punch Newspapers Sections Tessy Igomu Published 4 April 2021 A former Vice-President of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Julian Ojebo, says that some medical practitioners in Nigeria are paying personal loans running into several millions of naira, which they had obtained from financial houses to enable them to write certain qualifying examinations. Ojebo spoke in the wake of the ongoing indefinite strike by NARD members throughout the nation. Resident doctors had embarked on nationwide strike on April 1 to press the Federal Government to meet its 13-point demands. Speaking on a radio programme, Ojebo said that many doctors are indebted to commercial banks, and that the financial stress occasioned by the withholding of doctors’ pay was part of what informed NARD’s decision to go on its current strike.
