The Joint Ministerial steering committee on Thursday, met on the $568million West African Power Pool (WAPP), North Core project.
The Nigerian government, Niger, Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso through collaborative efforts, had developed a sub-regional interconnection project referred to as the 330 kV WAPP North Core Regional Interconnection Project.
Speaking at the first meeting of the Committee, the Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman said the project is considered one of the priority projects in the infrastructure program of the WAPP aimed at facilitating efficient energy trade in the sub-region among several other benefits.
He reminded that the North Core Project involves the construction of approximately 875 km of 330 kV and 24 km 225 kV transmission lines from Nigeria to Burkina Faso, through Niger and Benin with associated substations.

The US-sponsored Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) that restored electricity in post-conflict Liberia has finally closed after five years of operation in line with its mandate.
The compact was being administered by the Millennium Challenge Account established by the Legislature on October 23, 2015. The MCC invested US$257 million in energy and road projects, which yielded the rebuilding of the Mount Coffee Dam that was destroyed during the civil war.
The Millennium Challenge Compact is a five-year project initiated by the US Government with support from other countries including Germany, Norway and the European Investment Bank, to help poor countries alleviate poverty.
