A year in politics
2020 was a punishing and relentless year in politics, both abroad and at home. We take a look back at the ‘unprecedented’ year.
It was a year which exhausted the word “unprecedented” and forever tainted the exhortation: “be kind”.
In early December, MPs went hard and early into the summer break as Parliament shut up shop for the year. Lucky for some.
January
The year 2020 began roughly a year ago. MPs were gearing up for the election with National in the box-seat to govern. Multiple polls had National ahead of Labour.

New Zealand s third-quarter GDP surge puts us on top of the world, relative to our international peers. At 14 per cent, the dramatic rebound was driven by a combination of government and Reserve Bank stimulus, strong export returns - and by Kiwis drinking, eating and holidaying like the nation depended on it.
They will be completely flattened in the next election.

There s only one party with any sort of chance actually gives a damn and that s the Greens, so if the labour party falls for ap them then so be it, the Nats will do nothing, ACT will do less than nothing

The frenzied housing market prompted Finance Minister Grant Robertson to call on the Reserve Bank for help.
In November he wrote to Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr proposing to add house prices to the central bank s remit. The Reserve Bank is only one player in this, but everybody needs to be involved if we are going to make sure there is an affordable housing market, Robertson said.
