(Portland - March 15) Results of a clinical study conducted by researchers in Manaus, Brazil, show that the Gazelle® Malaria test outperformed Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and was nearly as accurate as more expensive and time-consuming expert microscopy in detecting Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) malaria. The data was published Friday, March 12 in the
Malaria Journal.
The double-blind study was based on 300 participants who sought care from Fundac?a?o de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado (FMT-HVD), located in Manaus, an area in the Western Brazilian Amazon, heavily endemic for P. vivax.

If you were given ultrasound in a word association game, sound wave might easily come to mind. But in recent years, a new term has surfaced: bubbles. Those ephemeral, globular shapes are proving useful in improving medical imaging, disease detection and targeted drug delivery. There s just one glitch: bubbles fizzle out soon after injection into the bloodstream.
Now, after 10 years work, a multidisciplinary research team has built a better bubble. Their new formulations have resulted in nanoscale bubbles with customizable outer shells so small and durable that they can travel to and penetrate some of the most inaccessible areas in the human body.

Academic freedom is a universal right and fundamental for quality higher education and scientific progress. There are many self-commitments by states and institutions to uphold and safeguard academic freedom, yet the Academic Freedom Index demonstrates that universities are under pressure in many countries around the world, said Katrin Kinzelbach from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Of course, there are major differences between countries, but overall we found that only about 20 percent of the world s population lives in countries where academic freedom is well protected.
The Academic Freedom Index (AFi) is the result of a collaboration between researchers in Germany and Sweden, as well as more than 2000 country experts from around the world. The Academic Freedom Index 2020 covers 175 countries and territories worldwide, which is up from 144 countries in 2019. In a highly collaborative effort, scholars from around the world have assessed an
