Warming streams pose threat to mayflies, study finds

Temperatures of warming streams rather than inadequate oxygen levels lead to poorer growth in mayflies, which are often seen as an early indicator of stream health because of their sensitivity to environmental change, according to new research at Stroud Water Research Center.
The results of a study at the Avondale, Pennsylvania, based research center disprove a common hypothesis that insects fare worse in warmer waters because of the temperature.
