This 90minute event was hosted by the american historical society. We have a terrific panel for you today. Just by way of introduction, i want to sort of explain how this panel came to be. And that is that we were all participants in an neh Summer Institute on veterans in society, ambiguities and representations. Think the subtitle there is incredibly important, right . Ambiguities and representations. It represents some of the confusion that might exist about who counts as a veteran, what it means to be a veteran, how that meaning has changed over time and how society has miss understand that change over time. How all of these things connect with nonveterans in society. So the Civil Military divide, which is seems to be growing ever greater. And so all of these issues were brought together in a threeweek Summer Institute down at virginia tech, in washington, actually. Hot temperatures and windy conditions have pushed the flame over highway 20. every day around 3 00 it has been kicking up and we are aggressive to get out and put it out at this point it looks like it is well established across the 20 were still crossing our fingers that will build a put it out but it looks like it is well established charles crews are still hoping to put it out this blazes burning in steep rugged terrain and crews are also trying to build containment liveslines around the fire cal fire says they are attacking this blaze from numerous directions and a variety of ways eventually have to connect the dots so we have little areas that we have tied in pretty well but if the areas above and below what are not tied and then it can still hope around so we have to get them connected but we are making some positive progress little by little pam hundreds of people have been forced to evacuated because of the fire. From his point of view church house was still a. When you look back in your career which was extraordinary but would you say you are most proud of having done . With the caveat that history takes a long time to judge i think im most grateful that we stood up for their right for people to i know there were a lot of criticism and a lot of it is probably justified about freedom agenda and declaring one of americas most Important Services was to work hard so that no one would live in tyranny. I think america is at its best and its highest calling when it leads both from power and principle. We stand for the proposition that the right to be enjoyed are indeed universal and if they are universal that there are no people for whom they shouldnt he will secured. Im very grateful that we were able to do that. Im grateful that some of my travels was when it was ice about people in a couple of things stick out as an individual. I went to china and a little boy walked up to me and said you are that
