When Carter Wrenn says Donald Trumpâs hold on the Republican Party is slipping, I listen.
Carter and I have fought on different sides of North Carolinaâs political wars for years, most notably the Jim Hunt-Jesse Helms Senate race in 1984. Despite that bitter campaign and our political differences, weâve become friends.
Carter is smart, tough and experienced. Above all, heâs blunt and candid; he calls them like he sees them.
Now, Carter is challenging the conventional wisdom that the Republican Party is Trumpâs party.
He recently did a national poll with John Bolton, Trumpâs former national security adviser. Carter wrote:

Headline reveals paper s agenda
Headline in Wednesday s edition: Texas reopening barely budged economy, virus cases. Buried in the story was the minor detail that there was no evidence of an increase in coronavirus cases.
Other, more balanced and reliable news sources told the story differently. For example, Forbes headline: Texas reports zero coronavirus cases for the first time since the pandemic began.
That headline certainly would not support your agenda, as the Texas plan was ridiculed by President Biden.
The News-Press does not deserve your readers trust.
