Have said, it looks like deja vu all over again. We appear to be barrelling towards another Government Shutdown this week with all the attendant infighting, name calling, and general washington nastiness, but the politics has a real life effect on the american people. Eamon javers has our cover story. Its time for congress to be held responsible reporter americans love to complain about the federal government, but when it suddenly goes away, the effects can be jarring. Back in 2013 elderly veterans pushed past barricades at the world war ii memorial and this became the iconic moment of the 16day standoff that forced the closure of most of the federal government. Estimates are the last shutdown copse tens of thousands of jobs and 2 billion in lost productivity. And now analysts say the odds of a new shutdown are at least even. My mood is one of a little bit of angst, but im a little bit more optimistic than what i hear some pundits putting out. Im optimistic that well be able that mr. B
The stop abuse act. We may call upon you to help us and that challenge. I also see one of the key significant components is limiting the stigmatism. Lifee gone to this and my because i have a Family Member who has a Mental Illness. The stigmatism that is still associated with Mental Illness is just as bad as substance abuse. It is something that we have to continue to inform and make people aware that this is a disease and that says something we can attack and that we can help. I also, and a hope that this year we can pass the stop abuse act. Therell several components of the act that i think would dramatically and immediately help those who are looking for a way to assist themselves or their Family Members and a way out and the deep dive that they are in. We also do have to inform those in our districts and around the nation of how pervasive this epidemic is. Under the influence. A lot of people think its about driving, but its speed. 60 percent of the injuries occur in intersection. Our public needs to be aware of this. Too often people are not yielding to oncoming pedestrians. We need a shift that will require everyone to Pay Attention to the streets. San francisco is ranked as having the highest total rates of fatalities and major injuries to pedestrians and bicyclist by both vehicle miles and by population. I know we can do better. We are a city that knows how to do things so lets get it done. This will call on the Transportation Authority to convene a working group of Pedestrian Safety advocates and lead the major county departments. Including the departments of Public Health, sf mta and San Francisco Police Department to develop and action plan.
