The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Friday welcomed the April 1 implementation of the Political Party Funding Act, saying this will increase party funding transparency ahead of the local government elections this year.

Electoral commission chairperson Glen Mashinini has cautioned that the Act is not a panacea to eradicating corruption associated with the funding of parties.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is ready to implement the Political Party Funding Act when it comes into effect on 1 April.
The 2018 legislation regulates the public and private funding of political parties. And it was signed in law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2019.

The Electoral Commission has begun its final phase of preparations to implement the Political Party Funding Act (Act 6 of 2018) from 1 April 2021.
This follows the announcement last week by President Cyril Ramaphosa of the coming into effect of the Act from that date.

The new Political Party Funding Act will provide for more transparency, but can t guarantee that illegal party funding won t continue, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said.
The IEC doesn t have the funds to immediately implement and enforce all the Act s provisions.
It also created a fund to which individuals and institutions could contribute at arm s length.
The funding of party projects by state agencies like intelligence could still recur in spite of a new law to regulate this more strictly, an Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) official said.
