Governor Gretchen Whitmer will get a letter this week asking her to disclose more details about a trip to Florida and the privately owned jet she flew on.
The governor says the trip was to take care of her ailing father. The governor’s staff says she paid for her seat herself. But the cost of the entire plane ride appears to have been paid for by a not-for-profit fund she controls. And the private jet belongs to a group of wealthy Detroit business people.
Republican Representative Steve Johnson chairs the House Oversight Committee. He says he’ll send a letter with a detailed list of questions.

Three months after his sudden resignation, the state heard from former Michigan Department of Health and Human Services director Robert Gordon for the first time.
The original severance agreement between the state of Michigan and Gordon included a non-disclosure agreement with neither side allowed to talk about the reasons behind the resignation. As more questions arose and fewer answers were came out, pressure built. Then the public found out about a $155,000 severance payment. After that, both sides decided to do away with the nondisclosure agreement. This lead to a meeting Thursday with the House Oversight Committee.
“The goal of this committee is to find truth,” said committee chair Representative Steve Johnson of Wayland, “To find out what actually happened.”

Now people have questions.
When Governor Whitmer made this trip out-of-state to visit her ailing father, there were no specific rules against doing so. Her office had put out strong recommendations against out-of-state travel.
Michigan Republicans are saying they have no issue with her making a trip to visit her ailing father but have an issue with her doing something she said Michiganders shouldn’t.
“That’s the issue here today,” said Representative Steve Johnson of Wayland, “Is the gross hypocrisy that comes from this administration.”
“I think we need to ask why isn’t Governor Whitmer being forthcoming?” said Representative Matt Hall of Marshall, “Why didn’t she just volunteer that she went and did this?”
