In 2009, only 7% of Dallas ISD students earned any kind of secondary credits within 6 years of graduating high school. Now, more than 10% of Dallas ISD seniors are expected to graduate with both their high school diploma and associate degree.
Students in the Dallas Independent School District have a few weeks to go before class lets out for the summer. But when the time comes, many of the graduates walking the stage for commencement will have earned more than just a high school diploma. Some will have college credits or even a degree.
The school district says it expected that some qualified students weren't getting special education services because of last year's pandemic shutdown. But the problem is worse than expected and began years before the COVID-19 closures.
The pandemic taught the district that every home must have WiFi. The district also wants every student to take full-day summer classes to combat learning loss.
Groups such as Black Voters Matter and the Next Generation Action Network will have seminars, rallies and more to honor and remember George Floyd a year after he was killed.
