At the start of the national lockdown the government gazetted regulations prohibiting evictions of tenants by landlords – which was in line with the declaration of the national state of disaster in March last year. Sowetan has reported on many cases over the past year of consumers being evicted from their homes or threatened with eviction for failing to honour their rental payment. We reached out to the Gauteng Rental Housing Tribunal, a body set up to resolve issues between tenants and landlords, without resorting to court in terms of the Rental Housing Act.  ..

Even in the best of times it can be a difficult task to secure reliable tenants, but the pandemic has added an extra layer of complexity into the mix. Financial instability, job losses and impacted credit scores make finding dependable monthly rental payments and finding stable tenants increasingly difficult. Recent stats from the Tenant Profile Network (TPN) paint an even darker picture of the rental landscape. TPN’s stats indicate that 60.74% of tenants paid their rent on time this quarter, while 9% of all tenants are not paying rent at all.
