U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents assisted in the rescue of seven undocumented migrants from a cross-border drainage culvert. The incident occurred on January 29, 2021, at approximately 3:30 p.m., when agents patrolling east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry discovered a man clinging to a closed grate inside a drainage culvert. The agents immediately opened the grate, which was obstructed by trash and debris. As the debris was released, water rushed through the opening and a second man was ejected along with the first. Emergency medical services, the San Diego Fire Department, and the Chula Vista Fire Department were immediately notified and responded.

SLBFE assets to be used to repatriate stranded migrant workers

Tuesday, 26 January 2021 - 11:07 The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has instructed the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to investigate the possibility of repatriating migrant workers stranded overseas due to COVID-19 travel restrictions using funds owned by the Bureau of Foreign Employment. A total of 34,721 workers who lost their jobs due to the fall of oil prices in the Middle East and the COVID - 19 disaster have already requested the Bureau of Foreign Employment to repatriate them. In response to COPE’s inquiry about whether there are legal impediments to the repatriation of Sri Lankan workers from various countries who have been affected by the COVID-19 utilizing SLBFE’s current assets of Rs. 14 million, the SLBFE Chairperson noted that there is no such obstacle.
