5 June 2021 GENEVA (4 June 2021) – UN independent experts on human rights said it is time for the United Nations to formally recognise that living in a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a human right. Around the world, there is a growing recognition that it is indeed a human right to live in a healthy environment, the experts said in a joint statement to mark World Environment Day. Of the UN s 193 members, 156 have written this right into their constitutions, legislation and regional treaties, and it is time for the United Nations to provide leadership by recognising that every human is entitled to live in a clean environment.
