For the second time in less than a year, a high stakes debate over police reform has erupted at the State Capitol, with emerging progressive lawmakers from racially diverse communities pushing for changes their constituents are demanding.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - The Minnesota House was nearing a vote Wednesday evening to impose new restrictions on police after a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murder.
Democrats said the Chauvin verdict had given them momentum to push for police accountability measures, and Gov. Tim Walz is vowing to exert pressure on Republicans who don t go along. But in Minnesota s divided Legislature, Republicans who control the Senate are not promising to pass bills before the session ends in mid-May.

ST. PAUL Minnesota state lawmakers are gearing up for a tough legislative battle in the wake of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin s guilty verdict for the murder of George Floyd, with Republicans saying justice was served in court and Democrats saying the verdict was only a first step.

ST PAUL, Minn. Early Thursday morning the Minnesota House passed a package of police reforms inspired by the killing of George Floyd and reinforced by the more recent traffic stop death of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center.
Republicans characterized the bill as a means of intimidating officers, but the lead author, Public Safety Committee Chair Carlos Mariani said most Minnesotans support the idea of stopping deadly police encounters with unarmed citizens.
