New York Republicans Take First Step Toward Impeaching Andrew Cuomo

New York Republicans are preparing a resolution to impeach Governor Andrew Cuomo, announcing Monday that sexual harassment allegations and undercounting COVID-19 nursing home deaths have created one bombshell after another.
State Assembly Republican leader Will Barclay held a press conference Monday in Albany to announce the first state legislature efforts to impeach Cuomo. Barclay cited the four separate claims of sexual misconduct, reports of his administration bullying state lawmakers and his undercounting of nursing home deaths following a controversial order to remove infected patients from hospitals. On Sunday, Cuomo refused to offer his resignation for a second time after two more ex-aides came forward with additional allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate workplace behavior which spans several years.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Ludovic Orban announced on Tuesday that Parliament has started the procedure to remove Ombudsman Renate Weber from office, according to AGERPRES. We have started the procedure regarding the removal from office of the Ombudsman. It is a procedure that in the last legislature was started by the National Liberal Party (PNL) floor groups. The request of the parliamentary groups, formulated under the previous legislature, was not sent to the joint judiciary committees. At a joint meeting, the standing bureaus refused to carry out the procedures in the Ombudsman Law and the regulatory procedures, Orban said at the end of a joint meeting of Parliament s two standing bureaus.

National Assembly speaker Thandi Modise granted public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s sabbatical leave on the condition she will avail herself to the ongoing parliamentary regarding her removal from office.
The process involves an independent legal panel assessing a motion to remove the public protector from office.
Mkhwebane’s office announced on Monday that she has gone on an 11-week sabbatical to get some rest.
TimesLIVE has since learnt that Modise granted Mkhwebane the leave of absence on condition she avail herself to the parliamentary process should she be required to appear. Mkhwebane is challenging the constitutionality of the rules that are guiding the parliamentary process.
