The government s decision to waive off customs duty on antiviral drug Remdesivir would help in augmenting the supply of the medicine in the wake of soaring COVID-19 cases in the country, Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister Sadanand Gowda said on Wednesday. The government on Tuesday waived off all customs duty on imported Remdesivir injections and the drug s active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in order to boost supplies. There is already a ban on the export of the Remdesivir injection from the country. Considering the immediate requirement on the recommendation of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Department of Revenue has reduced customs duty on #Remdesivir and its API/KSM. This step will further augment domestic availability of Remdesivir injection, Gowda said in a tweet.

BMC commissioner Iqbal Chahal on Wednesday said the BMC purchased
Remdesivir at a higher rate to save lives since there was an acute shortage of the drug in the city. Chahal said more than the rate, the BMC’s priority was to secure enough vials for Covid-19 patients who would need the life-saving drug in civic hospitals.

Vijayawada: Given the steady rise in coronavirus infections and the resultant deaths, the demand for the life-saving drug, remdesivir, has sharply increased in Andhra Pradesh in recent days.
As per information released by the state health authorities on Monday, there existed 23,115 coronavirus active cases. Eleven out of the 13 districts are having more than 1,000 active cases. Two districts Vizianagaram and West Godavari were having 647 and 258 active cases respectively.
