With the imminent threat of a third wave of the pandemic and much uncertainty about the vaccine rollout, more and more people are turning to what they see as their only option: Ivermectin an antiparasitic veterinary medicine.
In South Africa the product is not registered for use in humans yet, as is the case in countries such as India and Brazil where it is indicated for use against tropical diseases in humans.
However, the Gauteng High Court in February held that doctors are now allowed to import the human formulation of the medicine to treat patients with Ivermectin at their own discretion, but only after having applied to do so in terms of a section 21 application of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act.
Doctors may use ivermectin for Covid-19 treatment The court has now ordered that treatment of a Covid-19 patient may be initiated at the same time as an application is submitted by a doctor in terms of Section 21 of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act. NATIONAL NEWS - The urgent use of ivermectin for the treatment of Covid-19 is now legal.
This follows an agreement reached between civil rights organisation AfriForum and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) that was made an order of the court on 2 February by the Pretoria High Court.
