Firefighters in the Overberg region were on Monday night bracing themselves to battle the blaze, which had been burning in inaccessible terrain high up in the mountain.
Overberg Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Reinhard Geldenhuys said the fire – which was earlier burning for two days, under control, flared up on Monday afternoon due to hot weather conditions.
Overberg District Municipality fire chief, Reinhard Geldenhuys, said that the N2 was now open after the fire blocked off the road earlier on Wednesday.
International Fire Fighters’ Day (IFDD), celebrated annually on 4 May to honour firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, also marked the opening of a firestation in Hermanus.
