Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Patrick Oboi Amuriat was on Sunday evening arrested in Jinja in eastern Uganda by a joint team of police and army officers.
The arrest was commanded by Kiira region police commander, Dauda Hiriga who accused the FDC candidate of defying the new Electoral Commission guidelines that blocked physical rallies in high-risk districts including Jinja.
Over the weekend, the Electoral Commission banned campaigns in more than 12 districts, claiming it had been advised by health officials to suspend the physical political activities in an attempt to tame the rapid spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). As of December 27, Uganda s cumulative confirmed coronavirus cases stand at 33,811 and 248 deaths.
