not there was a wide spreed fraud? so the commission is looking at more than just the 2016 election. it s looking at the entire issue of voting irregularities of fraud and registration problems. so what we will be doing for the first time in our country s history we will be gathering data from all 50 states and using the federal government s databases which have been very valuable, social security administration has data on people when they pass away, the department of homeland security knows to have millions of aliens who are in the united states illegally and that s data that s never been bounced against voter roles to see if people are registered. we will try to get some numbers, some actual statistics because this debate is so contentious but often times the debate doesn t have enough facts in the debate and we are going to be providing those facts, putting them on the table and letting people know. maria: it s terrific specially all of the conversations surrounding this issue in
that it is no longer about the baseless, unsubstantiated, totally incorrect claim by the president that three million to five million illegal votes were cast in 2016. instead, we are now getting from sean spicer a more traditional argument of voter irregularities that are out there, whether it is registrations that are not correct, due to people that are deceased or registered in two places. he said he didn t want to get ahead of a thursday announcement of some sort of i don t think it certainly sounded like there may be a task force coming to look at this that are going to make recommendations about these registration problems. i think sean was trying very hard to move it off what the president was saying and make it about something. dwikly after he was questioned about the fact that the president s own lawyer had said that there had been no sign of irregularities. i believe it was in the state of michigan, and that s whether he said, well, we re going to focus on larger states,
traditionally have. if you look at a state like colorado, they did quite well. they were fourth this year. did the id have an impact in either suppressing votes in a particular area or motivating folks to go out to the polls because they felt their votes were attempting to be suppressed? well, we didn t look at voter id laws per se. they vary so much between states. some of them in some states you need a small number of photo id s, or you can t cast a ballot at all, and in other states you can have a large number of id s, and fine you don t have that, you might be able to cast a ballot. one thing we try to do with the index is show what the data shows. what is what s occurring with turnout in the states relative to other states? for instance, in 2012 turnout did go down nationally in almost every state turnout went down. if there was a big drop in turnout, that would be something to keep an eye on. also, if there were long wait times, if wait times went up in a particular state,
