$11M in pandemic aid awarded to transit agencies Share PORTLAND Greater Portland Council of Government has approved the allocation of $11.1 million in federal stimulus funds to help public transportation providers continue to operate during the pandemic. “The region’s public transportation system will be integral in the post-pandemic economic recovery, and this funding will enable us to rebuild customer demand after the pandemic,” said Cape Elizabeth Town Manager Matthew Sturgis, who chairs GPCOG’s transportation committee. The funds will go to seven transit agencies Greater Portland Transit District (Metro), the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, Casco Bay Island Transit District, Biddeford Saco Old Orchard Beach Transit, York County Community Action Corporation, the Regional Transportation Program and the City of South Portland Bus Service.  Concord Coach Lines has also received some funds to support its Portland to Boston operations.

Most of the money – $9.1 million – is to replace lost revenues, and the rest will be used for cleaning, sanitation, communications and to help recover lost ridership. “The region’s public transportation system will be integral in the post-pandemic economic recovery, and this funding will enable us to rebuild customer demand after the pandemic,” said Matthew Sturgis, Cape Elizabeth’s town manager and chair of the council’s transportation committee.

Rotary Club dedicates Bus Stop Shelter

BRIDGTON, Maine — Ten Rotarians assembled briefly on Friday, Dec. 4, to dedicate the Bus Stop Shelter at the Bridgton Community Center in the name of Rotarian Marlee Turner who passed two years ago. The Shelter is a Rotary project inspired by Marlee and championed by Dick Enright who worked with Lake Region High School Construction Work Center, which built this beautiful structure to top quality specifications as a community project. President Julie Forbes welcomed the group and praised Marlee Turner as living Rotary s motto, Service Above Self. Carmen Lone, Rotarian and Selectperson for the Town of Bridgton, accepted the turnover of the Shelter to the Town of Bridgton.
