The 2021 Latin AMAs
are set to take place April 15 live from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. The Latin AMAs return after the show went on hiatus in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The sixth annual ceremony will be broadcast on Telemundo starting at 7 p.m. ET with the red-carpet pre-show followed at 8 p.m. ET by the awards show.
Below, a breakdown of the 2021 Latin AMAs artist of the year nominees.
Anuel AA
Anuel displayed both his artistic and commercial prowess with not one but two albums reaching the top 10 of the Billboard 200 in less than 12 months. Anuel’s sophomore effort,
corridos act his second leader and fourth straight top five.
$ad Boyz 4 Life starts with 6,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 18, according to MRC Data, with the bulk of the album’s units deriving from streaming activity.
The Regional Mexican Albums chart ranks the most popular regional Mexican albums of the week in the U.S. based on multimetric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
$ad Boyz 4 Life, released Feb. 12 via JHRH/Warner Latina, registered 6,000 SEA in its first tracking week, which equates to 8.3 million on-demand streams generated by the songs on the album.
While it’s true that hip-hop and Latin music have dominated
Billboard’s global charts since their September launch, pop music is far from monolithic. “There are two sides to the coin,” says YouTube trends manager Kevin Meenan. “On one hand, music has become super global and is traveling like never before. But we’re also seeing that local music still really resonates locally.”
In fact, the hitmakers in most countries are local, according to the findings of a YouTube analysis of the top 2020 acts in 10 world markets. (See charts below.) Little wonder that so many albums finally found the space to breathe, develop and simply come to be. And while some of the albums on this list including J Balvin’s
Colores and Bad Bunny’s
YHLQMDLG were conceived of and/or released pre-pandemic, many others were borne out of solitude and introspection, resulting in material that was often deeply personal and cathartic.
