. KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Health officials expect more coronavirus vaccines to be available to service members and families in Europe, where vaccination rates have lagged behind military communities in the U.S. and many overseas installations. Many personnel and family members in Europe with high-risk medical conditions are still waiting to get their first shots. The timeline for offering vaccinations to all who want them is uncertain, even after President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he wants every adult in the U.S. to be able to receive vaccination appointments by April 19. “While we have been hesitant to make predictions on future vaccine deliveries, we are confident that vaccine allocations to Europe will increase throughout April,” said Gino Mattorano, a spokesman for Regional Health Command Europe.
. KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany The largest U.S. military hospital overseas may have to cancel coronavirus vaccinations as of next week, as supplies dwindle and new deliveries are delayed, it said. Most appointments to get a follow-up shot at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center near Ramstein Air Base could be canceled starting Tuesday morning, and patients will be “rescheduled as soon as we are resupplied,” LRMC said in a post on its Facebook page Wednesday. New supplies of the vaccine might not arrive for several weeks, it said. Only second doses are available for now, LRMC said. The delay contrasts with commands in the U.S., the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East, several of whom have recently received large vaccine shipments.
By JENNIFER H. SVAN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: March 10, 2021 The U.S. soldier killed last week in a car crash in Kaiserslautern had dreams of making the Army a career. Sgt. Monesha L. Burton was profiled in an Army-produced feature last year for her work as a veterinary food inspector during the pandemic. Her family ties influenced her to join the Army in 2016, she said. “My dad, uncle and cousins all served. I was inspired by everything they did,” she said. “Right now, I plan on doing 20 years.” Burton, 22, died Friday from injuries she sustained in a car crash near Kleber Kaserne and Daenner Kaserne. German police said Burton collided with another car that had the right-of-way at the intersection. The crash investigation has been turned over to the U.S. military, police said.
