NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Ahead of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, leading eye care nonprofit Orbis proudly celebrates 22 years of working to eliminate the blindness-causing infection trachoma in Ethiopia. Most recently, Orbis administered more than 7.5 million doses of trachoma-fighting antibiotics in just one month despite significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The security in Tigray remains unstable and unpredictable. The situation is particularly volatile in rural areas where large numbers of people are believed to have fled.
The Logistics Cluster reached Shire, for the first time since the conflict started, with 40 metric tons of food items.
Partners on the ground are receiving reports indicating rising hunger, as the conflict exacerbated the lean season and desert locust infestation.
Due to the conflict, farmers have missed the harvest season and with regional trade blocked, the local markets have or are nearing collapsing.

ICRC teams began to distribute medical supplies today (14 December 2020) to Ayder Hospital, the Regional Health Bureau, and the ERCS pharmacy in Mekelle, the Tigray State capital, Ethiopia. The supplies will help care for more than 400 trauma patients, treat those with chronic and routine medical conditions.
In addition, ICRC’s team in Mekelle has been working to get the hospital fuel to run its generator as well as water.
ICRC’s Head of Operations in Mekelle, Maria Soledad Rueda Garcia said, “This is a huge team work with our Red Cross volunteers.”
