News of coral destruction as New Zealand pushes for double orange roughy limit

News of coral destruction as New Zealand pushes for double orange roughy limit Conan Young © Getty A file photograph of species-rich Coral Reef, Osprey Reef, Coral Sea, Australia. New Zealand s bid to increase the amount of orange roughy commercial fishers can catch has hit a snag. It s been revealed one of NZ s deep sea trawlers has accidentally destroyed a large amount of coral and sea sponges, forcing the temporary closure of one area to fishing. The revelation came this week at the international South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation meeting of fishing nations. No further details were revealed but the rules that apply to the Tasman Sea, outside a country s exclusive economic zone, state a vessel must move on if it catches more than 80kg of stony coral or 60kg of soft coral.
