(file photo) 50 years ago Join the Walk for Development On May 8 and 9, 1971, more than 1 million people planned a walk to raise money for underdeveloped areas through the International Walk for Development. Around 350 communities decided to participate. A walker would find a sponsor who would pay between 10 cents and $20 for every mile walked and 15% of the raised funds went to the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation. Grand Opening The Northern Mart on Highway 59 South in Detroit Lakes had its grand opening starting Thursday, April 29, through Saturday May 1. They gave out free coffee and donuts.
