Mountain Safety – Tragedy provides key learning for alpine hunters

Source: New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC)   A coroner has found the death of an experienced Swedish hunter, whose body remains unfound in the West Coast, was due to his failure to follow many of the New Zealand alpine hunting best practices. Three of the most important considerations for alpine hunters, as stated in the NZ Mountain Safety Council (MSC) report were adopted by the coroner, which are: all alpine hunters should cautiously consider their route and terrain, always hunt in pairs or more, and should always carry a communications device to keep trusted contacts informed and to contact emergency services if needed.

Missing hunter likely fell to his death in West Coast s unforgiving alpine terrain

Searchers look for missing Swede Hans Christian Tornmarck in the Karangarua area of the southern West Coast. Police and Land Search and Rescue (SAR) conducted another unsuccessful search in January 2020 when Tornmarck’s mother, Anki Lindroos, and his sister, Jenny, travelled to New Zealand. Searchers built a rock cairn and placed a piece of granite that had been brought from Sweden by Tornmarck’s family near the campsite. The coroner said Tornmarck was described as fit, calm and a “low risk-taker”. However, a hunting associate said Tornmarck’s skillset was “entry level in terms of skills in an alpine environment”, but “competent in general hunting skills and also in bushcraft”.
