New initiative encouraging Black involvement in Sask politics

  REGINA A first-of-its-kind initiative is pushing for more Black Canadians in western and northern Canada to run for office, with the possibility of a federal election on the horizon. We have something like two fifths of the black population in Canada but we have less than 1/5 of the candidates that run. We think that there d a particular need here for us to kind of serve and to focus on,” Petros Kusmu, the Co-Founder of Black Voters Matter Canada said. In last November’s election, Juliet Bushi was the first Black woman elected as a School Board Trustee in the Regina Catholic School Division.

Over the course of Black History Month, we are hoping to learn more about the rich dynamics of the Black experience in Regina through the stories of people from different backgrounds and professions. Dr. Jane Ekong says that when she arrived in Regina 38 years ago, there were so few Black residents, we were kind of a novelty.

Regina schools prepare to support low-income students during remote learning

Posted: Dec 11, 2020 6:37 PM CT | Last Updated: December 12, 2020 As Regina schools return to online learning, school divisions are preparing to supply low-income students with the devices and data to allow them to stay in class. (Radio-Canada) With Regina s public and Catholic schools returning to online learning next week, school divisions are preparing to help low-income students with the technology they need to get to class.  The public school board announced Monday that all students from pre-kindergarten to Grade 12 will move to remote learning starting Dec. 14, with in-class learning resuming on Jan. 11. Regina Catholic Schools said Tuesday they will do the same.
