The lords have thrown the first spanner into the brexit works so carefully constructed by the Prime Minister, voting to amend the brexit bill to tie the governments hands by giving eu citizens here a guarantee of a right to remain. Now the plain truth is, there is little controversy over the substance the government wants the eu Residents Herejust as the lords do and the Leave Campaigners in the referendum did. The issue is about whether you negotiate their guarantee of residence in return for assurances over the rights of the british elsewhere. Or should we make the guarantee unilaterally . It was hard fought in the lords today. If we are to be concerned about anybodys rights after brexit, to live anywhere on this continent of europe, it should be our concern for the rights of british people to live freely and peacefully in those other parts of europe.
