The parliamentary committee on immigration has released the results of its study on how the pandemic has affected Canadian immigration.
Salma Zahid, the Chair of the committee, presented the report in the House of Commons on May 13. It touches on issues pertaining to the three classes of Canadian immigration: economic, family, and refugee.
The report is a result of the findings of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, after hearing testimonies from immigrants, interest groups, lawyers, and other stakeholders. The committee is comprised of Canadian members of parliament, who are elected officials. There is at least one member from every major political party sitting on the committee. Their mandate is to monitor federal policy relating to immigration and multiculturalism, as well as oversee the immigration department and refugee board.

President Joe Biden’s decision to explore the root causes of forced migration from Central America to the United States is a step in the right direction. But it will lead only to long-term solutions. In fact, political preferences aside, both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have shown a type of leadership that is rarely found in American politics: governing with a long-term vision.
As Harris will soon find out, one of the most complex geopolitical problems in the 21st century involves dissimilar root causes forcing Central American migrant children to seek protection abroad: drug trafficking, domestic violence, cultural forms of discrimination, gang violence, state violence and corruption, institutional inequalities, and climate change.
The post-arrival COVID-19 molecular test requirement
According to Subsection 1.4(1), every person who is five years of age or older and who enters Canada must:
Undergo a COVID-19 molecular test in accordance with the instructions of a quarantine officer or the Minister of Health:
On entering Canada, and
After entering Canada; and
Retain evidence of the COVID-19 molecular test result for 14 days, beginning on the day that they obtain the evidence of that result (the period begins again if the person develops signs and symptoms of COVID-19, receives evidence of a positive result under any type of COVID-19 test, or is exposed to another person who exhibits signs and symptoms of COVID-19).
