The white house announcing the president and the first lady will visit pittsburgh tomorrow to pay their respects in the wake of the antisemitic attack that killed 11 people worshiping in a synagogue. Theyll be joined by ivanka trump and jared kushner. The mayor of pittsburgh had urged the white house to delay the trip since tomorrow is the first funeral. Progressive jewish leaders also pushed back, calling on President Trump to denounce White Nationalism before coming to pittsburgh. In the wake of all this the president is refusing to take any blame for his tone and rhetoric. Lets discuss now. Rabbi chuck diamond is here. Hes the former rabbi at tree of life. Also dr. Jonathan winkle, who lives in the neighborhood of the tree of life synagogue and knew several of the victims. Thank you so much for joining us. I am so sorry that you guys are having to deal with this. Our hearts go out to you. I cant believe that you even can come on tonight. So thank y
Black patrons at a kroeger Grocery Store and told him that whites dont shoot other whites. It was also a week in which the american president and the Ruling Republican Party refused to accept any responsibility for creating the climate of hate that we find ourselves trapped in. Here is one example. The president s son, one of his sons last night. It seems like we have gotten to a point in life and society where everything has to be kind of politicized. Everything has to be somebody has to point the political finger to everything. I think we should pull politics out of some of these things. This person doesnt represent the left. He doesnt represent the right. The person was sick, deranged. And, again, i truly, truly hope, if found guilty, which he will be, that he gets the death penalty. The antisemitic attack which could be the deadliest mass shooting of Jewish Americans ever was a mass killing in Squirrel Hill, a part of pittsburgh that was literally mr. Rogers neighborhood. Many broadcasts tonight began by telling you the name of a murdererer who killed 11 people in the synagogue behind me. They may show you his pictures and repeat his name so much that it will become as well known as other mass murderers whose names you probably remember. We hope history does not remember this killers name and we wont be saying it or showing you his photo in the hour ahead. Instead we want to take a few moments on those who really matter, on the 11 people who lived good and decent lives, loved by family, friends and leave behind them broken hearts and happy memories. Daniel stein was killed saturday. He was retired and according to his son didnt require much. His son said he was a simple man. His nephew said he had a dry sense of humor. Sense of humor. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. Daniel stein, we will remember. Joyce fienberg was a former researcher at the university of pittsburgh, who treated her phd students like family, were told. Her late husband taught at cmu just down the road from tree of life. Those who knew her said she had a huge personality who lit up the room. Joyce fienberg, let us remember. Richard gottfried was 65 and had a dental practice with his wife. He was jewish, she was catholic. They counseled other interfaith couples at her church about what to expect. Bernice and sylvan simon were married at tree of life years ago. Imagine that. Devoting time to charitable work, charitable causes. They were always ready to help said a neighbor and always with a big smile. B bernice and sylvan simon died as they lived, together. We will remember them. Dr. Jerry rabinowitz has treated all kinds of patients with kindness and compassion, particularly those with hiv aids, at a time when fear of t
You say that these people were the pillars of the synagogue. Talk to us about that. Not just the synagogue, don. The community. So i personally knew Cecil Rosenthal. I knew jerry rabinowitz. And i knew rich gottfried. Ill start with rich. Rich and i were colleagues. We work at a federally qualified health center, Community Health center that is dedicated to serving everyone regardless of their income, regardless of what they look like, how they pray, the problems they may have encountered in their lives. And rich and his wife were both dentists. They had a successful practice and as they were winding down their careers getting close to retirement pe decided to spend part of each week, the last seven years providing care to people who probably wouldnt get dental care otherwise. In addition to the time that rich spent supporting the synagogue and going to other synagogues i just learned this evening to make a minyan, to make a quorum in order for everybody to be able to worship together.
