House Oversight and Reform Committee Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., on the nationwide crime surge complicating police reforms.
House Oversight and Reform Committee Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said on Tuesday that when people of color are in danger, they don t call activists and politicians, they call the police. I got a text from my mom this morning. She still lives in Brooklyn, New York. Hi, Mom. And she said point-blank, son, you were right last summer: Defunding the police is only going to hurt the inner city. It s only going to hurt Black and brown families because they are the ones who call the police when something goes wrong, Donalds told America s Newsroom.
Manchin Opposes DC Statehood Bill, Says ‘Let the People of America Vote’
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on April 30 that he doesn’t support legislation that would make Washington, D.C., the nation’s 51st state, dealing a blow to the initiative, which Republicans have panned as an unconstitutional power grab.
“If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment. It should propose a constitutional amendment and let the people of America vote,” Manchin told West Virginia’s MetroNews in an April 30 radio interview.
Last month, the House passed H.R. 51 the Washington, D.C. Admission Act in a vote of 216–208, backing congressional Democrats’ view of “no taxation without representation.” But Republicans see the legislation as an unconstitutional ploy to add two more Democratic senators.
House Set to Vote on DC Statehood During Week of April 19
House Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced Wednesday that the House will vote on the D.C. statehood bill for the second time two weeks from now. Although it is certain to pass the Democrat-controlled House, its fate is uncertain in the tied Senate with GOP members opposing the measure.
“The week of April 19th the House will take a historic step in righting the monumental wrong of denying the 712,000 federal taxpaying American citizens who live in the nation’s capital voting representation in Congress and self-government without congressional interference into local affairs,” Norton said in a statement.
