Tsunami risks well known, but a worst-case scenario could have damaged fuel infrastructure.
Refining New Zealand evacuated its staff and contractors at its Marsden Point oil refinery after a tsunami warning was issued.
The tsunami warning was issued this morning by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) following the magnitude 8.1 earthquake near the Kermadec Islands, which followed two earlier magnitude 7 earthquakes, one at 2:37am and another at 6:40am.
It has since been downgraded and then cancelled, with GNS advising NEMA the largest waves have now passed. NEMA now advises that the threat of damaging tsunami waves has passed and people can return to their homes and businesses has passed though the official advice

A union representing the bulk of unionised members at Refining New Zealand fears the eventual job losses could be more than the 90 currently earmarked as the company scales back production.
