The term “win-win” tends to be overused, but no other description more perfectly describes the recent legislative solution hammered out by public charter schools and traditional school districts two groups that historically have not exactly seen eye to eye on revenue issues.
SB 229, which the governor signed following overwhelming approval in the Senate and the House of Representatives, equalizes funding for public charter schools. Importantly, this compromise was reached without reducing the local ad valorem tax revenue that traditional districts receive.
The path to SB 229 was a difficult one. Years of failed attempts to solve the funding inequity prompted our charter schools organization to sue the state on behalf of public charter school students, families and educators. The state Education Board agreed to a settlement, but the terms of that settlement upset many traditional school districts, and some districts considered lawsuits to undo
